Hello July! I’m back to share a new blog hop post with you, along with 9 of my blogger besties again. If you’ve been following along with our monthly posts, welcome back! If you’re new to my blog, I hope you’ll enjoy what we each have to share! If you’re coming to my blog from Sheila’s at Maison de Cinq, I know you’ve just been filled with delight in seeing that beautiful kitchen she designed! This month we are each sharing a “Before and After” transformation we’ve completed in our homes. I’ve been busy with a few transformations around here. I wanted to share my backyard before and after with you, however it wasn’t totally complete yet. So, I’ve decided to share my new living room transformation with you.
Before and After
My Living Room: Before
I donated our old coffee table in February, and never found one to replace it. So, I just pulled this bench over and used it as a temporary coffee table. Well, five months later…it was still there! Until, I found a new one at HomeGoods! I usually never find a coffee table I like at HomeGoods, so when I saw my new one, and it’s price, I was sold! I also had this faux animal hide in another room, but brought it over into the living room, again as a temporary fix. I knew I wanted a new rug, but hadn’t found one I liked. Again, I got lucky at my favorite HomeGoods, and found a beautiful area rug, as you’ll see below.
Here’s what the room looked like, as I was deconstructing it (please don’t mind the 2 really poor phone photos). That’s another story: My iPhone was immersed in water several months ago, and ever since my camera has been terrible. No worry, the rest of the photos are shot on my DSLR.
It wasn’t terrible, but it needed an update!
My Living Room: After
So, there’s the new coffee table and area rug! I loved the table, and I saw this rug on the same trip. I really wanted both, but I went home and slept on the idea. It didn’t take me long to decide! I ran back to HG the next morning as soon as they opened, and hoped they’d still be there! My luck, they were!
I love the round shape, the carved legs, and of course the reclaimed wood finish. (I tend to pick a lot of furniture pieces in this finish). I love how this finish feels casual and relaxed, but the pieces I choose are usually traditional styles. I think it’s a good mix! I also love this rug, that has a very traditional pattern, with an updated ‘distressed or vintage’ feel to it. Again, adding to the casual and relaxed feel.
I’m not totally done with styling the area, but I used a wood tray that I had in another location to add accessories to. Of course, I had some fun shopping for flowers to add to the room!
Pillows from HomeGoods.
I love shopping for flowers at the wholesale flower mart because they have such a great selection, and I can create any look I’m after. Candle from Anthropologie, bookshelf and mirror from Ikea, everything else is from HomeGoods.
I also added 4 new pillows. I love these two big soft denim Euro pillows (found them in the bedding section) because they are the right (big) size to anchor the corners of my large sectional sofa. Similar sofa available at Macy’s.
Love this embroidered floral pillow. I think it adds to the eclectic feel in the room. Now onto the other side of the room.
Yep, those are blankets in a champagne bowl. 😉
I wanted to keep it really simple, clean and light in color. I found these two milky white candle sticks, and topped them with two new white pillar candles. I think I like this look on my mantel better than any other look I’ve done before. I always feel like I need to add a lot of stuff to the mantel, but I think the actual trick is to keep it simple and clean. I spray painted my fireplace screen silver ( it was gold), and I did the German Smear technique on my fireplace stone, to whiten it up! You can see more about the technique here.
Flower fun: I snipped some hydrangeas from my yard, and added these silvery green acacia leaves.
Decorating with Flowers
I had some fun moving my bouquets around and photographing them in different spots in the room!
Btw, I love white vases and pitchers for my flower arrangements. They are a beautiful, simple vessel for all that flowery goodness!
